Decay detection and surveys

You may have noticed some fungus at the base of your tree's branches or stem or a large cavity and may be concerned that your tree is not looking as well as it has done. Or perhaps it’s showing signs of structural weakness such as cracking or an excessive amount of deadwood in the tree canopy? At Atkinson Tree Surgery we can help you understand if there is a problem, what it is and how you can manage the issue to ensure you can retain the tree safely when possible.

We use an internationally recognised decay detection system to carry out a visual tree assessment method from ground level and avoid any intrusive inspection as far as possible. If we think there may be something further to investigate, we can use techniques such as:
  • Percussion – essentially lightly striking the buttress or roots of the tree with a nylon hammer to see where the sound varies, indicating where decay may be present.
  • Resistograph – this is a micro drill which records drilling pressure through a tree. It provides a read out which can then be analysed to see if decay is present.
  • Fractometer -assessing samples of wood for their integrity to assess decay. This measures how strong the wood is which can indicate the type of decay which is occurring.
We can also arrange for a climbing inspection to be carried out or for laboratory analysis to identify more unusual specimens. Contact us and we can discuss what would be best for your situation.

Do you think there may be something wrong with your tree but can’t reach it because of safety or limited access?

Atkinson Tree Surgery in Milton Keynes are NPTC trained specialists in restricted access and dangerously positioned tree work. We have specialist equipment which allows us to reach trees in restricted access areas. We can also work on jobs which other tree surgeons may have turned down because they are positioned dangerously, above live rail tracks for instance. “Hi, just a quick note to thank you for the work, it has made a huge difference to the light levels in the garden and the advice given to have it done this way was excellent. We always liked the tree but knew something needed doing so we now have the best of both worlds! Cheers.”
